It is my great pleasure to welcome you to historic
Guildhall for the inaugural Sheriffs' Ball, which promises to be full of
the finest dining and dancing... with a nautical twist!
May I express my deepest thanks to Sheriffs Alderman Charles Bowman and
Dr Christine Rigden for chairing the Ball and all their tremendous hard
work to make this event a success. I would also like to thank all
members of the Sheriffs' Ball committee for their assistance and
enthusiasm and to everyone who has bought a table or tickets, made a
donation or gifted a prize for the auction.
Funds raised tonight will primarily support JDRF, the type 1 diabetes
charity whose vital research is paving the way to a cure for type 1
diabetes, and Sea Cadets, who support young people across the UK through
nautical adventure and training. Two innovative charities, two excellent
causes. It is a great pleasure to have so many Livery and City friends
and colleagues with us this evening and I hope you have a wonderful
time.
We are hugely honoured to host the this Sheriffs'
Ball, and we very much hope that this event will become an annual
fixture in the calendar.
We would like to add to the Lord Mayor' s message by thanking all the
many people and companies who are named in the programme for their
extraordinary generosity. Without their involvement an event of this
quality would have been impossible and we simply wouldn't have been able
to raise such a significant amount of money for the charities of the
Lord Mayor's Appeal 2016.
It has been both a pleasure and an honour to bring together this evening
of fine dining and dancing in celebration of Jeffrey's mayoralty. Thank
you to everyone here and we wish you a most enjoyable evening; we look
forward to seeing you on the dance-floor.
All funds raised from the 2016 Appeal year will
benefit the essential work of the Appeal's two main beneficiary
charities; JDRF and Sea Cadets.
JDRF is leading the global fight to cure, treat and prevent type 1
diabetes. The organisation brings together researchers, governments and
funders from around the world to increase our understanding of this
complex condition. Money raised by the Lord Mayor's Appeal will help to
fund cutting-edge research that could revolutionise type 1 diabetes
treatment.
Sea Cadets support young people across the UK through transformational
nautical adventure and training, This can give young people self-belief
and life skills at a critical point in their lives, helping them to
become leaders, seafarers, innovators, and community guardians in the
future. With funds raised from the Lord Mayor's Appeal, we aim to
replace one ageing 35ft training vessel in the Sea Cadet fleet with a
new British-made ship.
Small percentages of the Lord Mayor's Appeal will also be awarded to
each of two City charities: The St Paul's Chorister Trust and the
Mansion House Scholarship Scheme.
