A very warm welcome to the LABC London Region Building
Excellence Awards 2019 and congratulations to all our finalists.
Tonight is a highlight in our gear and we hope it is for you too. Our awards
are a bit different in that they celebrate technical design and construction
quality. they celebrate excellence at creating well built, well designed,
high performing buildings. Being shortlisted already means that you have
been recognised for your success and I'd like to pass congratulations to you
for that achievement from all LABC’s members.
The LABC network is the largest building control provider in England and
Wales. We have over 3500 professionals working in every council in England
and Wales. We are dedicated to maintaining high standards of compliance,
whilst offering an impartial and pro-active service to business customers so
you, in turn, are able to deliver the very best buildings to your
end-customers.
During the evening we will showcase and reward excellent individuals,
excellent companies and excellent projects that have completely satisfied
the Building Regulations sometimes in difficult circumstances.
Remember we are not really concerned with beautiful designs. The LABC Awards
uniquely celebrate excellent design, specification and skilled construction.
Sometimes we reward projects where teams have tussled with technical issues,
difficult sites or required innovative technical solutions. Above all we
value and acknowledge good interaction between developers, professionals,
contractors, sub-contractors and LABC building control.
Tonight’s winners will automatically qualify for our prestigious Grand
Finals, to be held on Friday 8th November at the Westminster Park Plaza in
London and l wish each of you every success. Finally, I want to make two
“thank yous”. First, to you for choosing to work with LABC; we really do
appreciate that. Secondly, to our surveyors, technical support staff, our
judges, sponsors and the events team at LABC who have made tonight possible.
Thank you all.
Paul Stephens, LDSA President
As President of the London District Surveyors Association
it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the LABC London Region Building
Excellence Awards. We are here tonight at the prestigious Guildhall, London
which has been the City powerhouse since the twelfth century. This is one of
the highlights of the year when we gather to celebrate success and, as you
will see tonight, we have some outstanding examples of building excellence.
LABC has grown over the years and has become the voice of local authority
building control, representing the local authorities at a national level, I
am proud that the service has retained its public accountability, dedicated
to maintaining high standards of compliance with the regulations and
associated standards, whilst offering an impartial service to customers with
an ethos that does not have profit as a driving force.
The Building Excellence awards are an opportunity for us all to celebrate
the very best in construction within the London region, recognising the high
level of skill, dedication, team working and professionalism that the
building industry is capable of achieving.
I offer my congratulations to all finalists and firmly believe this awards
ceremony demonstrates that Local Authorities with LABC continues to be the
quality provider of building control services to many of the best builders
in the region.
Tonight’s winners will be automatically entered into the national final to
be held in November 2014, may I take the opportunity of wishing them every
success. I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the people

District Surveyors Association
Every year LABC has a new President elected from our members - they serve two years as a Junior and Senior Vice President before becoming LABC President. The President role is honorary for a year and promotes the work of LABC through attending industry events and meeting government. They also support the work of our Chief Executive and meet members to discuss local issues they may have and to disseminate information from LABC on forthcoming initiatives and/or regulatory changes. Each year the LABC President selects a charity of their choice to support. This year David Darlington, the current LABC President has chosen ‘Help for Heroes’. He chose this charity because he has had an interest in cur armed forces for many years and has seen first-hand the hard work, professionalism, dedication, and ultimate sacrifice that cu aimed forces make on our behalf. He is glad to use this opportunity to support servicemen and women when they need our help the most, David has registered for a 56km sponsored walk from London to Brighton, and if all goes well, the 100km Thames Path Challenge in September.
“Help for Heroes was set up with a simple desire to improve the quality of life for those who have suffered life changing injurious or illnesses whilst serving with our armed forces. The charity provides support to individuals and the families, through immediate financial support, employment opportunities and training, recovery centres, sports recovery, and by supporting other specialist Charities.”
To support Help for Heroes please donate money In the envelopes on your table. If you tick gift aid’ more money will go to Help the Heroes.
Gareth Barnbrook, LABC’s business development director for new homes, will take part in a Red Devil tandem skydive on 24 July 2014 at Old Sarum Airfield. Gareth has no previous skydiving experience and will be leaping off the plane in tandem with an expert from Click and Jump.
Built on foundations over 300 years old, the modern
London District Surveyors Association is an organisation of the heads of
local authority building control in London.
Probably, its most important role is to guide local authority building
control officers in London with up-to-date, expert advice to achieve
uniformity of interpretation and operation of the national building
regulations.
This role is reflected in the Association's history where the Act for
Rebuilding the City of London in 1667 decreed that there should be
appointed:
'one or more discreet and intelligent Person or Persons in the art of
Building to be Surveyors or Supervisors to see the said rules and scantlings
well and truly observed...'
District Surveyors have met together regularly since 1774 when the Building
Act confirmed the control of building work by statutory surveyors in an area
of central London.
In January 1845 the original District Surveyors Association was founded and
is incorporated in 1905 as the forerunner to the LDSA.
As president of the London District Surveyors
Association it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the London Building
Excellence Awards here at the Guildhall. This is one of the highlights of
our year, when we gather to celebrate success and as usual we will showcase
many excellent examples of innovative design and construction.
LDSA is the London Region of LABC which has come to truly represent Local
Authority Building Control at a National level. All involved with LABC are
proud that our service has maintained its independence and impartiality.
These awards are an opportunity for us to celebrate the very best in
construction, recognising the high levels of professionalism and skill the
industry is capable of reaching.
We are honoured to host this event in the City of London which is of course
home to many of the most spectacular buildings ever erected in the United
Kingdom. Many of these were erected centuries ago, but that sense of
adventure continues to this day. Indeed London generally makes up a large
section of the British Construction industry. We are all proud to be part of
an industry which plays such a major role in the National economy.
I look forward to tonight’s ceremony and offer my congratulations to all
those who have been nominated this evening. I believe that the quality of
all our entries demonstrates that 1ABC is the foremost provider of Building
Control in the Country. I would also like to thank all those that have
worked so hard to make tonight’s event a success.
